Piedmont presents works from Davis collection of African-American art

DEMOREST - Works by a number of African-American artists are on display now through Aug. 27 at the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art at Piedmont College in Demorest.<br /> <br /> The exhibit is part of the collection of Norm and Carnetta Davis of Birmingham, Ala., said MSMA director Daniel White. <br /> <br /> "The Davises have a collective name for their art collection, the African word "Umoja," White said. "The word translates to "unity" and serves the collection well, describing the diverse but unified front the artists in the collection bring the audience. All of the works are either by long established members of the African-American Studio Art movement, such as Romaire Bearden or David Driskell, or by current movers and shakers such as Kara Walker. The common thread they all share is the reflection of being an African-American man or woman, and how that transfers to what they want to say and how they express it."<br /> <br /> White said the works in the show represent not only a broad group of artists, but also a variety of media and processes. Artists include Freddie Styles, Larry Walker, Fred Jones, Emma Amos, Hale Woodruff, Bob Thompson, and Wosene Kosrof, among others.<br /> <br /> Admission is free, and a reception for the show will be held from 5-7 p.m., Aug. 21. The MSMA is located at 567 Georgia Street in Demorest. The museum is open from 10 a.m.
