JEFFERSON - A faster U.S. 441 in two counties in our area is coming next week.

Georgia Department of Transportation officials said the move affects the speed limit on a 25 mile stretch of State Route 15/US 441in Jackson and Banks counties. Where it's currently 55 miles per hour, it will be raised to 65 next Tuesday.

While the speed limit will be higher on paper and on signs, DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith said an engineering study on the corridor finds most drivers are running 65 or faster already.

"Keeping traffic flowing at a consistent speed will increase safety along the corridor. We looked specifically at crash data and the roadway characteristics - the grade of hills, valleys and severity of curves. This section of SR 15 meets the requirements for raising the speed limit where it is now 55 miles per hour," Smith said.

The move does not change areas where the speed limit is currently lower than 55.
