SWAT standoff ends in Buford

BUFORD - A suspect is in custody following a tense SWAT standoff in Gwinnett County Friday evening.<br /> <br /> According to Police Cpl. Jake Smith, Public Information Officer for the county, the incident began at 4:15 p.m. when a neighbor reported hearing shots fired inside a residence on Gold Mine Drive, near Simmons Mine Circle.<br /> <br /> Shortly after responding officers arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Jon Christopher Digiulio, began firing at their position. Smith said at this point Gwinnett County's SWAT personnel were activated and called to the scene.<br /> <br /> Upon their arrival, Digiulio began firing upon members of the SWAT team, one of whom returned fire in the form of a single shot. Smith said the suspect was struck and injured by this solitary round.<br /> <br /> Digiulio, who is wheelchair-bound, was removed from the home and transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to Smith. No other injuries were reported in the incident.<br /> <br /> Smith said the officer who fired the round at Digulio will placed on administrative leave, per standard operating procedure, while the Deadly Force Investigation Team investigates the incident. <br />
