Water line break found; repairs beginning

HOMER - Almost 24 hours after it first was reported, a major water line break in Banks County was located.<br /> <br /> The water leak was located by a Banks County Public Utilities worker around midnight. It was in the woods off Mt. Sinai Road near the intersection of Silver Shoals Road. Due to steep terrain and darkness at that location around midnight, repair work was delayed until daylight.<br /> <br /> Some residents north of Interstate 85 will still be without water until the repairs are made, and all Banks County water customers north of Interstate 85 should follow boiled water advisories that are issued and those customers should stay on that boiled water advisory until cancellation is issued by Banks County Utilities.<br /> <br /> Those that have had water outages should remember to turn off water heaters for safety.<br /> <br /> Citizens may dial (706) 677-6810 for updates that will be renewed periodically through the event to learn more.<br /> Residents that are unable to purchase water at a store of their choosing may pick up bottled water at local paid Fire Stations. Banks County families may pick up a case of water at one of the following locations:<br /> * Banks County Fire Station 210 which is also known as Hollingsworth Fire Station; it is at the corner of Rock Springs and Old Hwy 441 N across from Moss Mill Road. The address is: 4173 Old Highway 441;<br /> <br /> * Banks County Fire Station 220, which is also known as Rock Springs Fire Station; it is across from Katfish Kormer. The address is: 3433 Yonah Homer Road;<br /> <br /> * Banks County Fire Station 310, which is also known as Banks Crossing Fire Station; it is located on Industrial behind the Banks Crossing Outlet Mall. The address is 181 Industrial Park Boulevard;<br /> <br /> * Banks County Fire Station 410, which is also known as Grady Fire Station; it is at the corner of Highway 198 and Damascus Road. The address is: 2348 Damascus Road;<br /> <br /> * Banks County Fire Station 510, which is also known as Fire Administration; it is located across from the Courthouse. The address is: 155 Yonah Homer Road.<br /> <br /> By 10 p.m. Friday, a 5,000-gallon water tanker was placed in service at the Banks County Recreation Department on Thompson Street.<br /> <br /> It is recommended to purchase food-grade water storage containers from surplus or camping supplies stores for use for water storage. <br /> <br /> If you decide to re-use storage containers, choose two-liter plastic soft drink bottles - not plastic jugs or cardboard containers that have had milk or fruit juice in them. The reason is that milk protein and fruit sugars cannot be adequately removed from the containers and provide an environment for bacterial growth when water is stored in them. Cardboard containers leak easily and are not designed for long-term storage of liquids. Also, do not use glass containers, because they are heavy and may break.
