Winder's Pentecost taken with 11th pick in MLB Draft; Adams, Gettys taken in 2nd round

NEW YORK -- Former Winder-Barrow standout and current Kennesaw State catcher Max Pentecost was the first Georgia player selected Thursday in the Major League Baseball Draft.<br /> <br /> Pentecost was taken with the 11th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays. He recently helped the Owls knock off Alabama in the Tallahassee Regional to advance to their first-ever Super Regional.<br /> <br /> Coming into the regionals, Pentecost led the NCAA with 23 home runs and was second in the nation with a .423 batting average.<br /> <br /> White County right-hander Spencer Adams was taken with the 44th selection (2nd round, 3rd pick) by the Chicago White Sox. Adams, a University of Georgia signee, has a fastball clocked in the mid-90s and has four pitches that he can throw for strikes. He also helped lead the Warriors to a spot in the Class AAA playoffs this past season.<br /> <br /> Gainesville's Michael Gettys was taken just a few minutes later by the San Diego Padres with the 51st pick. The power-hitting outfielder, also a Georgia-signee, was considered a potential top 10 pick before the season began. He is considered a four-tool prospect.<br /> <br /> The first two rounds of the draft were held Thursday. No other local players were selected on Thursday.<br /> <br /> The only other Georgia player taken in the first round was Michael Chavis, a shortstop from Sprayberry High School in Cobb County.<br /> <br /> Franklin County's Brent Honeywell (class of 2013) also was taken in the second round with the 72nd pick by Tampa Bay. Honeywell played for Walters State CC this past season.<br /> <br /> Former Buford High standout Sam Clay, who just finished his sophomore season at Georgia Tech, was taken in the fourth round by Minnesota with 110th overall pick.
