Arias, Clippers handcuff G-Braves

LAWRENCEVILLE -- After facing the best rotation in the International League in Rochester on their recent road trip, the Gwinnett Braves ran into another tough hurler on Tuesday night at Coolray Field. Columbus right-hander Gabriel Arias pitched a season-high 7 1/3 innings of one-run baseball to propel the Clippers to a 5-1 victory.<br /> <br /> The Clippers (27-31) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never trailed. With one out, G-Braves' starter Zach Stewart gave up back-to-back-to-back singles to Tyler Holt, Ryan Rohlinger and Elliot Johnson to load the bases. Giovanny Urshela reached on an infield single to push across the first run, while an errant throw on the play by third baseman Edward Salcedo sent home a second run. Tim Fedroff capped the scoring with an RBI single, making it 3-0.<br /> <br /> Columbus added another run against Stewart in the top of the sixth inning. Singles by Adam Abraham and Justin Sellers put runners on first and second with one out. After a fielder's choice ground out, Holt delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0.<br /> <br /> Holt was back at it in the top of the eighth inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, the centerfielder singled off left-hander Atahualpa Severino to extend the lead to 5-0.<br /> <br /> Gwinnett (30-27) scored their lone run in the top of the eighth inning. Salcedo singled off Arias, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Roberto Perez. After a walk, Ozzie Martinez hit into a fielder's choice scoring Salcedo to make it 5-1. However, that would be as close as the G-Braves would get as C.C. Lee recorded two outs to escape the jam.<br /> <br /> Arias (W, 1-2) allowed a run on six hits, walked one and struck out five over 7.1 frames. It was the first time he had thrown past the seventh inning since August 13, 2010 when he threw 9.0 innings against the Dominican Summer League Yankees.<br /> <br /> Stewart (L, 3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on a season-high 11 hits over 6.0 innings. He walked two and struck out two. Kameron Loe, Severino and Juan Jaime each threw an inning in relief, combining for a run on two hits.<br /> <br /> Gwinnett finished the night with seven hits. Mark Hamilton was the lone G-Brave with a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4.<br /> <br /> The Clippers recorded 13 hits on the night. Abraham finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Holt went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs.<br /> <br /> The Gwinnett Braves and Columbus Clippers play game two of the four-game series on Wednesday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Right-hander Cody Martin (3-4, 3.36) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers will counter with right-hander Danny Salazar (0-3, 7.11).
