LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Gwinnett County fire officials say the department will soon issue body armor for firefighters to wear during violent situations.
Department spokesman Tommy Rutledge said in a statement that the need for protective equipment was brought up after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut and an internal review of response procedures during mass trauma situations.

Several of the department's firefighters were also held hostage in a house in Suwanee in April 2013 by a man having financial problems who demanded that his cable and power be turned back on.
Rutledge says the department has also bought trauma kits that include bulk bandaging supplies and tourniquets.
