CLEVELAND - Most White County property owners should have received their property assessment notices for this year by now, but county officials said Monday a mistake has been made on every one of the documents.

During Monday's White County Commission meeting, Chief Tax Assessor Bryan Payne told the commissioners his office mailed out 18,838 notices last Friday, but later determined they had put the wrong value on the previous year's value section of every notice.

"The mistake doesn't affect the bottom line of property value for this year - the current value is correct," said Payne. "As for as figuring the tax bill everything is correct, the only thing wrong is the prior year's value."

According to Payne, notices will been mailed again - this time with the correct information. Property owners will have the same 45 day appeal period.

Payne told the commission the cost to mail notices a second time will be $9,000.
He said the money for the additional mailing will come from his department's current budget.
