Rochester tops Gwinnett, 6-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Red Wings utilized strong pitching for the second straight night to defeat the Gwinnett Braves by a 6-1 score on Saturday at Frontier Field.<br /> <br /> With the loss, the G-Braves (29-25) dropped to 3 1/2 games behind Durham in the International League South Division standings. The Bulls beat Lehigh Valley 10-0 in Durham on Saturday.<br /> <br /> After Gwinnett failed to score in the top of the first against Rochester starter Trevor May, the Red Wings stuck for a run against Daniel Rodriguez. With one out, Doug Bernier singled and moved to second on a single by Deibinson Romero. Chris Colabello lined a single to left, scoring Bernier for a 1-0 lead. The Red Wings (30-24) never trailed after.<br /> <br /> In the bottom of the second, Pedro Florimon (1) led off with a solo homer to left off Rodriguez for a 2-0 Red Wings lead.<br /> <br /> In the bottom of the third, Romero walked with one out and moved to third on a groundout to deep short by Colabello. Wilkin Ramirez then singled to left, scoring Romero for a 3-0 lead, and Ramirez scored on an error by Gwinnett third baseman Edward Salcedo on a ball hit by Florimon for a 4-0 lead.<br /> <br /> In the bottom of the sixth, with Kameron Loe now pitching for the G-Braves, the Red Wings added to their total. Don Rohlfing led off with a single to left and moved to third on a double by Chris Rahl. Bernier stroked a single to left, scoring both Rohlfing and Rahl for a 6-0 lead.<br /> <br /> The only Gwinnett run came in the top of the eighth off Rochester reliever Matt Hoffman. Tyler Pastornicky drove a one out single to center and a single to right-center by Phil Gosselin put runners on the corners. Mark Hamilton drew a one-out walk, and Todd Cunningham plated Pastornicky from third with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 6-1. <br /> <br /> The G-Braves re-loaded the bases in the same inning, but A.J. Achter kept them from scoring again. Cunningham's RBI in the inning snapped a season-long scoreless drought of 16.1 innings for the Gwinnett offense.<br /> <br /> Rodriguez (L, 4-6) worked 5.0 innings in the loss. He gave up four runs, three earned on nine hits, walked two and struck out two. Loe went 2.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs and one strikeout. Juan Jamie worked a perfect bottom of the eighth with two strikeouts.<br /> <br /> May (W, 5-3) pitched 7.0 scoreless innings with four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Hoffman pitched 0.2 innings with two hits, one earned run and two walks. Achter (S, 4) went 1-1 innings with one strikeout.<br /> <br /> At the plate, Pastornicky and Gosselin were both 2-for-4 for Gwinnett. <br /> <br /> Rochester was led by Eric Fryer (2-for-4), Florimon (2-for-4, HR, RBI), Eric Farris (2-for-5) and Bernier (2-for-5, 2 RBIs).<br /> <br /> The Gwinnett Braves and Rochester Red Wings meet in game three of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Right-hander Gus Schlosser (3-1, 6.12) will start for Gwinnett, while the Red Wings will counter with right-hander Yohan Pino (6-1, 1.73). First pitch is set for 1:05 PM.
