GRIFFIN - Authorities say a Griffin police officer was shot and killed while working an off-duty security job at a Waffle House location in Spalding County.

Police say three people are in custody. The altercation began when 43-year-old police officer Kevin Jordan asked two men and a woman to leave the restaurant early Saturday. Police say the woman began fighting with Jordan and one of the men, 30-year-old Michael Bowman of Griffin, fired a gun three times into the officer's back when Jordan attempted to cuff the woman.

Police say Jordan's brother was in the restaurant parking lot at the time and shot Bowman, who was taken to a hospital. They say Jordan's brother has a permit to carry a gun.

Jordan joined the department four years ago. The GBI is investigating.
