ATHENS, Ga. (AP) An Athens woman convicted in the stabbing death of her newborn son has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/RCf0DD) 23-year-old Cassandra Elyse Norwood was sentenced Wednesday on a malice murder charge. Norwood will be eligible for parole after 30 years in prison.

Authorities have said Norwood hid her pregnancy from relatives and killed the baby boy by stabbing him and slitting his throat shortly after giving birth at home.

Authorities say Norwood hid the baby's body and told investigators that she accidentally stabbed the baby while trying to cut the umbilical cord. Prosecutors have said the newborn was wounded 19 times. One of Norwood's sisters found the boy's body while she and her parents were at a local hospital.
