Gainesville attorney, former state Representative dies

GAINESVILLE - Former state Representative Wyc Orr has died.<br /> <br /> Orr, who was 67, died Wednesday, May 28. He was 67.<br /> <br /> He was a Gainesville attorney whose firm Orr & Brown LLP included himself and his daughter, Kristine Orr Brown.<br /> <br /> In addition, the politically active Orr was a familiar voice on WDUN in Gainesville, both as a commentator and a participate in election coverage. Orr served two, two-year terms in the Georgia House of Representatives before leaving that body for an unsuccessful campaign for the 9th District Congressional seat in 1992.<br /> <br /> A native of Tifton, Georgia, Orr was a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Tennessee Law School and had been a trial lawyer for more than 40 years, according to his firm's Website. <br /> <br /> His civic contributions are numerous as well as his active participation in local and state bar associations. (See link below.) <br /> <br /> In April, the Southern Center for Human Rights honored Orr for his contributions to the legal system with its 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award. The organization said Orr had made extraordinary contributions to justice and fairness in Georgia, including his efforts to create a public defender system in Georgia.<br /> <br /> In 2012, he was named a board member of Common Cause Georgia, a non-profit, non-partisan citizens' advocacy group.<br /> <br /> Orr was also active in the First United Methodist Church in Gainesville.
