G-Braves thump Pawtuckett behind Schlosser

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Gwinnett Braves got a fine pitching performance from right hander Gus Schlosser and made the most of six hits to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox by a 8-3 score in game two of the four game series Tuesday night at McCoy Stadium.<br /> <br /> The G-Braves (28-22) picked up a game on first place Durham as the Bulls saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with a 12-4 loss at Toledo. Gwinnett is now 1.5 games behind Durham in the International League South standings.<br /> <br /> After two scoreless innings, the G-Braves jumped on Pawtucket starter Matt Barnes for three runs in the top of the third. Edward Salcedo led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Jose Constanza bunted to Barnes, but he threw wildly to first allowing Constanza to reach and moving Salcedo to third. Todd Cunningham then hit into a force play, scoring Salcedo from third to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. Tommy La Stella (1) followed with his first Triple-A homer, a two-run shot to left, extended the lead to 3-0.<br /> <br /> While Schlosser was dominating the Red Sox, the G-Braves were busy adding more runs in the fifth. Constanza led off with a walk and a single by Cunningham put runners on the corners with no outs. Phil Gosselin reached on an infield single off the glove of Red Sox second baseman Ryan Roberts, scoring Constanza for a 4-0 lead, while Mark Hamilton plated both Cunningham and Gosselin with a two-run triple, extending the lead to 6-0. The Red Sox opted for right-hander John Ely out of the bullpen, and Christian Bethancourt would ground out to second, scoring Hamilton from third to make it 7-0 at the halfway point.<br /> <br /> Schlosser was masterful through 6.2 innings, giving up only one hit, but he ran into trouble with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the seventh. Before completing the frame, he a gave up a single to Travis Shaw, an infield single to Christian Vasquez and walked Alex Hassan to loaded the bases. Dacula, Georgia native Shannon Wilkerson delivered a two-run single, scoring Shaw and Vasquez to make it 7-2. Mike McCoy followed with a single, scoring Hassan to cut the Gwinnett lead to 7-3. But, reliever Wirfin Obispo entered from the bullpen to strikeout Roberts to end the threat and the frame.<br /> <br /> The G-Braves tacked on their final run in the top of the ninth against reliever Tommy Layne, as Constanza walked, moved to second on a groundout by Cunningham, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Gosselin.<br /> <br /> Schlosser (3-1) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Obispo worked one-third of an inning with one strikeout. Atahualpa Severino went one inning with two hits and one strikeout. Jamie worked a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.<br /> <br /> Barnes (1-3) went 4 1/3 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out six, earning his third loss of the season. The bullpen fared well as Ely went 2 2/3 scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts, while Layne worked two innings with one earned run, three walks and one strikeout.<br /> <br /> For Gwinnett at the plate, La Stella's two-run homer was his only hit in four trips. Constanza went 1-for-2 to increase his hitting streak to nine games. Gosselin now has a six-game hitting streak with a 1-for-5 night with two RBIs. <br /> <br /> Pawtucket (26-27) was led by Vasquez who was 1-for-3. Wilkerson was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs.<br /> <br /> Game three of the four game series is set for Wednesday night in Pawtucket. RHP Yunesky Maya (1-0, 3.68) will start for Gwinnett. The Red Sox will pitch LHP Chris Hernandez (1-5, 4.26).
