Audit probes Ga. juvenile justice turnover rate

ATLANTA (AP) -- A state audit cites low pay, long hours and management concerns as reasons for a relatively high turnover rate at the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.

Morris News Service reports a probe from the Department of Audits and Accounts found a general 49 percent turnover rate in the department, and a 57 percent turnover rate among entry-level officers.

Auditors noted the turnover rate leads to a lack of veteran officers to promote at state detention facilities, leaving workers with little training in management positions.

Department Commissioner Avery Niles says he and his executive staff have reviewed the department's recruitment and retention issues and have set strategic goals to reduce staff turnover rates.
