GAINESVILLE - The Memorial Day weekend got off to a deadly start Friday night.

Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville reports that a woman who fled a road check then fled from troopers died as a result of crash injuries.

Sgt. G.R. Harper said troopers were conducting a roadblock west of McEver Road on Georgia 347 (Lanier Islands Parkway).

Harper said he was stationed a short distance prior to the road check, acting as a safety officer.

"A car with a South Carolina plate pulled up to my location just west of the roadblock," Harper said.

Harper got out of the car, making contact with the female driver and a male passenger, sending them back through the roadblock.

Harper said the driver stopped briefly for the officers at the road check, then fled.

Harper said the woman, identified as 28-year-old Brittany Tucker of Anderson, S.C., fled at speeds greater than 100 mph on Georgia 347.

The pursuit continued to Spout Springs Road, then onto Thompson Mill Road, Harper said.

Tucker lost control of the 2011 Honda Civic, left the roadway and struck several trees.

"The driver was critical at the scene and later died at Gwinnett Medical Center," Harper said.

Traffic was light at the time of the pursuit, Harper said.

"She was very, very, very reckless in her driving," Harper said.

Tucker had a suspended driver's license. Her male passenger, also from Anderson, S.C., was on probation, Harper said.

Harper said the vehicle's owner told them the car had been reported stolen, "but we've not confirmed it yet."

The incident happened at 11:46 p.m. Friday.
