BUFORD - Gwinnett County firefighters urged visitors to the Chattahoochee River to check the Buford Dam water release schedule before going swimming.

Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge issued the request following a call to the river Friday afternoon in Suwanee. Rutledge said it happened around 3:24 p.m. at Settles Bridge Park.

A older teenage girl had been stranded in the river because of rising water and swift current. When rescuers arrived, the teen was already out of the river. Rutledge said friends had helped her.

Several other people were also able to exit the water, and no injuries were reported.

Rutledge said levels along the Chattahoochee are subject to sudden rise and turbulence because of activity at the dam.

Rutledge said all visitors to the river should call 1-855-DAM-FLOW (1-855-326-3569) to check the release schedule.
