ATLANTA - Gainesville attorney E. Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. was in Atlanta Tuesday, May 13 to receive the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Center for Human Rights.

Orr was recognized at a benefit reception at the The Carter Center in Atlanta.

In a press statement last month, the SCHR committee said the award was presented to Orr in "tribute to his extraordinary contributions to justice and
fairness in Georgia. In particular, we honor his heroic efforts to create a public defender system in Georgia, and his continued work to ensure the realization of the constitutional promise of Gideon v Wainwright."

"Anyone would be humbled, as indeed I am, by such an honor from an
organization whose charter, history, and successes are as magnificent as those of the Southern Center for Human Rights," Orr said when told of the award in April.

Orr's family and a contingent of Gainesville friends attended the reception in Atlanta.
