GAINESVILLE -- Five law enforcement officers from Hall County were honored Tuesday for outstanding achievement in their professions by the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville.

Officers from the Gainesville Police Department, the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia State Patrol, the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Department of Natural Resources received the John W. Jacobs Sr. Memorial Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement during the club's meeting.

It was the 17th year the club has honored law enforcement officers. The idea of the award, named for Jacobs, the club's first president, was developed by Ricky Rich, director of investigations at the Department of Juvenile Justice, and former Sheriff Dick Mecum, now chairman of the Hall County Board of Commissioners.

The officers who received awards are:

Sgt. Andy Smith of the Gainesville Police Department
Officer Zackary Lathem of the Hall County Sheriff's Office
Trooper First Class Spencer Monger of the Georgia State Patrol
Sgt. Robert Bruce of the Gainesville RYDC, Department of Juvenile Justice
Corp. Adam Loundermilk of the Law Enforcement Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources
