Dawson County Sheriff's Office warns of new phone scam

DAWSON CO. - A new phone scam has shown up in Dawson County.

According to Captain Tony Wooten with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, they've gotten several reports over the last week of a man calling people claiming he's a Sheriff's Deputy.

He tells them they've missed jury duty, and that they need to pay a fine over the phone. If they don't, they'll face an arrest warrant.

"Obviously that's a scam. That's not how the system works," Wooten said. "That's obviously a scare tactic."

Wooten said they've tried getting the message out on social media, and they made a point of notifying senior citizens.

The scammer has been using the name "Lieutenant Martin." Incidentally, there is a Deputy Martin on the force, but that deputy is a female.

"I think that name is just one that was picked out of the blue," Wooten said.

If you are contacted by this con artist, Wooten says you can call and report it to their non-emergency number at (706) 344-3636.
