GAINESVILLE - Former Gainesville Mayor Jim West died Saturday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a two-month illness.

West, 82, was elected to the Gainesville City Council in 1989 and served on the council until 2000. He served as mayor 1997-1998.

A native of Carrollton, West was living in Marietta when he and his family moved to Gainesville where he went to work for the Chevrolet dealership here, which was then known as Jim Wilson Chevrolet. West's next career move was to take a job at the Citizens Bank in Gainesville. He retired from his banking career at Georgia First Bank after more than 40 years as an executive banker.

West was involved in several civic organizations where he held board positions and was a long-time member of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Council.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:00 at Lakewood Baptist Church.
