Included were Karen Neff of Public Health District 2, headquartered in Gainesville.
The Practice Advisory Group functions to direct and guide the Internship and Residency Programs for the College of Public Health as well as to connect the academic resources of the college to public health agencies.
This year, the it gave awards to two recipients, Agency of the Year and Preceptor of the year. Award recipients were nominated by the students they worked with. Each student submitted a written nomination and one person was selected for each of the two categories.
Receiving the Preceptor of the Year Award was Karen Neff with Public Health District 2 in Gainesville, Georgia.
Neff is the Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program Coordinator for the district. She implemented and oversees the Be Proud! Be Responsible! curriculum in the Hall County Juvenile Justice System. This curriculum is an evidence-based intervention that reduces the risk of HIV, STDs and Teen Pregnancy.
She was nominated by interns Jenessa Teague and Kelly Truesdell, both Masters of Public Health (MPH) students with concentrations in Health Promotion and Behavior. Of Neff, Teague wrote, "Karen is not only our internship supervisor, but a great mentor and someone that we can rely on not only professionally, but personally as well."
The Agency of the Year Award went to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Information Collections and Review Office through Tony Richardson. He was nominated by Lunarosa Peralta, a Health Policy concentration student.
In her nomination letter, she wrote, "Mr. Richardson has encouraged me every step of the way, while also providing me with an honest and austere critique of my work. It is this treatment that I feel honored to have worked for him these past 10 months." Richardson is the Chief of this office which is a part of the Office of the Associate Director for Science at CDC.
