Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley reports that when the incident occurred three deputies were holding a safety road check on Defoor Road.
"This is one area of the county known for drugs, high crime, and where two homicides occurred a couple of years ago," Shirley said.
Shirley said there probably have been more drug arrests on Defoor Road than any other location in the county.
"During the safety check, an individual driving a white Jaguar pulled up to the deputies," Shirley said. "The deputy could smell the odor of marijuana emanating from the inside of the [car]."
Asked by the deputy if he had been smoking marijuana, the man ultimately admitted he had. The man, whose name was not released initially, agreed to a field sobriety test.
"It was during this time that the suspect - a long-time drug dealer of 25-plus years - ran from the deputy, jumped back into his car with another deputy trying to pull him out," Shirley said. "The suspect was able to pull away, striking the deputy and throwing him into the air."
Shirley said the deputy landed on the road, being dragged until he was able to break loose.
"The other deputy was struck by the outside mirror after the suspect attempted to run him over," Shirley said.
The suspect was apprehended about an hour after the incident.
Additional information about the offender and the deputies involved was not available initially.
