ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - The United Nations secretary-general is calling on world policymakers to show greater effort in addressing the threat of climate change as negotiators attempt to forge a new global warming pact next year.

Ban Ki-moon told delegates at a gathering in Abu Dhabi on Sunday that efforts to improve global prosperity and security could be undone without urgent action on the environment.

Ban was in the United Arab Emirates capital to mark the start of a conference meant to lay the groundwork for a climate summit he has called for world leaders in September.

That meeting in turn aims to create a foundation for negotiating a sweeping climate deal in 2015 - the target year for such a pact after a 2009 summit in Copenhagen ended in discord.
