DUNWOODY -- Flowery Branch proved Friday that its late surge to reach the playoffs was no fluke.

The Region 8-AAAAA fourth-seeded Falcons stunned Region 6-AAAAA champ Dunwoody taking a pair of wins, 7-2 and 8-2, to sweep their best-of-three first round series on the road.

The Falcons (18-8) had to sweep a pair of games from Winder-Barrow last week in the final two games just to get into the playoffs and demonstrated that they will be factor.

Jonathan Hughes and Dylan Gibeau were outstanding on the mound, each pitching complete games. Hughes got the win in Game 1 fanning five and Gibeau got the win in Game 2 striking out 10.

Coach Scott Myers said he was never concerned about his staff coming into the playoffs.

"We feel we have enough arms to win any series. The key for us will be can we score enough runs. I was very pleased with how the offense played," Myers said.

Hughes helped himself at the plate with two hits and two RBI. Justin Seabolt, Gibeau, and Andrew Nolt each had one hit and two RBI in Game 1 for the Falcons.

In Game 2, Cam Davis-had three hits and Seabolt and Gibeau each added two hits and two RBI for Flowery Branch. Bailey Godfrey had one hit for the Falcons in the second game.

Myers said both gameas turned on controversial calls on the bases.

"The first one (in Game 1) came when they ruled we missed a base on a first-to-third situation. The second one (in Game 2) they said our guy left early at third on a sacrifice fly," Myers said. "Both times it kind of got the guys fired up. Those were big plays for us."

Next up for the Falcons will be the North Paulding-Pope winner next Wednesday on the road.
