Baseball: Elephants, Wolves take Game 1 victories; West Hall, Jefferson fall in openers

GAINESVILLE -- Gainesville and Buford opened the state baseball playoffs with Game 1 victories at home Friday.

The Red Elephants knocked off Tucker 7-4 in Game 1 of their best-of-three Class AAAAA series at Ivey-Watson. Buford hammered North Murray 14-0 in five innings in Game 1 of its Class AAA series at Gerald McQuaig Field.

West Hall led 2-1 in the sixth inning against Sonoraville but fell 5-2 in Game 1 of its series on the road. Jefferson, ranked No. 1 in Class AA coming into the playoffs, lost 3-1 to Greater Atlanta Christian in Game 1 of its series at home.

Gainesville got its win with six runs in the bottom of the first. That was more than enough for Michael Gettys, who went six innings allowing two runs on five hits. Sims Griffith got the save pitching the final inning.

Luke Maddox had three hits and Caleb Whitenton had two RBI for the Elephants.

Buford blew open a close game with 12 runs in the third and fourth innings against the Mountaineers. Georgia Tech-signee Joey Bart led the way for the Wolves with two hits, including a long home run, and four RBI.

Nick Wilhite had two hits and three RBI and Austin Wilhite had two hits and two RBI for Buford.

Jake Higginbotham got the win scattering four hits and fanning nine in four innings of work.
