CARNESVILLE - A Demorest woman was killed in a single-vehicle wreck in Franklin County Wednesday afternoon.

According to spokesmen for Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa, Carlye Elrod died after losing control of the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire she was driving.

The wreck on Georgia Highway 164, also known as Bold Springs Road, was reported at 12:45 p.m., but troopers said it happened sometime in the 35 minutes prior to that.

Elrod was driving the two-door car north on Georgia 164 when, for unknown reasons, she lost control of the vehicle, overcorrected, lost control and skidded 219 feet before striking two trees with the driver's side of the car, Trooper 1st Class Oneal Sadler said.

"She was killed on impact," Sadler said.

Elrod was not wearing a seatbelt, but Sadler said in this case it likely would not have made a difference.

Sadler said Elrod's last contact was a text to her mother around 12:09 or 12:10 p.m.

He said the wreck happened sometime between that time and 12:45 p.m.

The wreck happened on Elrod's 20th birthday.

Sgt. 1st Class Al Whitworth said alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the wreck.
