Baseball: Gainesville wins, gets some help to move into first in 8-AAAAA

CONYERS -- The Gainesville baseball team knocked off Heritage 12-5 on Monday only to find itself alone in first place in Region 8-AAAAA.

The Red Elephants' victory, combined with Flowery Branch's 11-10 win over Loganville, vaulted Gainesville into first place.

The Red Elephants (18-6, 12-2 Region 8-AAAAA) were led by three hits and two RBI from Sims Griffith, while Michael Curry crushed a solo home run. Caleb Whitenton also produced two hits, while Michael Gettys had a hit and an RBI. Drew Wright also had a hit.

Curry earned the win on the mound, while Griffith earned the save.

Gainesville will play host to Cedar Shoals at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday at Ivey-Watson Field.
