FLOWERY BRANCH - Hall County emergency crews shut down a stretch of Atlanta Highway in Flowery Branch for several hours Friday afternoon while they fought a residential fire.

Hall County Fire Marshall Scott Cagle said the initial call came from a neighbor around 12:20 p.m. to the 5800 block of the highway near Hill Top Drive.

Cagle said the 1,200 square foot, wood-framed structure had heavy smoke and flames showing when firefighters arrived.

"Firefighters were able to force entry into the home and make a very quick interior attack and was actually able to keep all the fire damage to one localized area," said Cagle. "However it did get into the attic and consumed all of the attic as well. So approximately 30 to 40 percent of the house was destroyed."

Atlanta Highway remained blocked until around 3:20 p.m., according to Cagle.

The initial investigation revealed the cause of the fire was most likely accidental. "Right now, it does appear to be an accidental fire - an electrical short from the dyer connection into the wall socket itself."

One person was displaced due to the fire. Cagle said he did not need Red Cross assistance and will be staying with family.
