Mellichamp concert to feature French compositions

DEMOREST - Dr. James Mellichamp will present an organ concert with "French Flourishes" at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 27, in the Piedmont College Chapel in Demorest.<br /> <br /> The concert will feature works by French composers and French-educated composers from the 18th to the 20th century. Selections include works by Charles Tournemire, Phillip James, César Franck, Louis Vierne, Charles-Marie Widor, Joseph Bonnett, and Marcel Lanquetuit.<br /> <br /> Dr. Mellichamp is president and a professor of music at Piedmont, and will perform on the college's Sewell Pipe Organ, constructed in 2002 by Casavant Freres of Ste. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The organ features some 3,691 pipes and was designed by Mellichamp and Casavant to emulate a variety of organ styles, including French, English, and German.<br /> <br /> Originally from Toccoa, Dr. Mellichamp's concert career spans more than 40 years, and he has made appearances as an organist throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His concerts include solo recitals at such notable venues as the Washington Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral, and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. In the summer of 2013 he performed seven concerts across Russia. A member of the music faculty at Piedmont since 1982, he has designed some 50 organs for churches and colleges in the United States. He is also the author of articles related to organ design and construction published in various musical periodicals and records for the Mayflower label (www.mayflowercds.com).<br /> <br /> After study with Harald Rohlig at Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Ala., Dr. Mellichamp was an international organ scholarship recipient at the Hochschule fuer Musik, Herford, Germany. He completed a Diploma while studying organ with Arno Schoenstedt. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he was a student of the legendary Wilma Jensen.
