Track and Field: Chestatee girls thrive in 8-AAAA finals

MONROE -- The Chestatee girls track and field team battled its way to second place in Region 8-AAAA courtesy an impressive outing on the final day of the meet on Wednesday in Monroe.

The Lady War Eagles racked up 10 top four finishes, including victories in the 3,200 meters and 300 hurdles, as seven different athletes qualified for next weekend's state sectionals in Carrollton. Chestatee's boys also claimed the 3,200 meters.

Meanwhile, Lumpkin County's girls put up five top four finishes and two gold medals, while the Lumpkin boys notched two sectional spots. Johnson also qualified three athletes for sectionals.

Lanier swept both boys and girls championships, but the Lady War Eagles pushed the Lady Longhorns thanks to victories from SaraBeth English in the 3,200 meters (12:26) and Kim Hylton in the 300 hurdles (47.15).

Hylton also finished third in the 100 hurdles (17.92) and fourth in the long jump (14-9.75), while Kristin Moroz took third in the 300 hurdles (49.84) and second in the high jump (5-4). Maggee Wilson was second in the 800 (2:33) and Merrie Burnett fourth (2:35), while Abbie Cliche was second in the 3,200 (12:47).

Chestatee's Jack Carnes claimed the 3,200 (10:25), while Logan Brock was second in the 800 (2:12). Zac Cheshire qualified fourth in the pole vault (9-0).

Lumpkin County's Sydney Kinard won the long jump (15-6.5) and finished third in the triple jump (33-8.5), while Emily Garner won the discus (95-0) and took second in shot (31-8.5). The Indians' Austin Pierce also finished runner-up in both the 100 (11.10) and 200 (22.27).

Johnson's Marco Dominguez was third in the 300 hurdles (43.23), while Juan Soto was second in the pole vault (10-0) and Isaiah Del Campbell third (9-6).
