DAWSONVILLE -- North Hall took home three region titles and had four second place finishers to run out to a big lead after Day 1 of the Region 7-AAA track-and-field meet Wednesday at Dawson County High School.

All field events and the 1600-meter run were completed Wednesday. The sprint finals and the 3200-meter run will be held Thursday at Dawson County.

Unlike the girls meet where there were multiple-event winners, all seven finals in the boys were won by seven different athletes. The Trojans tallied 81 points.

The most exciting finish may have been in the discus where it came down to the final throw for White County senior Dalton Whitfield.

Dalton, who was battling a pair of North Hall throwers in Drew Bryant and Destin Bennett, had been in a similar position last year when he finished second.

This time, he took a quick, breath, collected his thoughts, and let loose what he felt was a solid throw. When it landed 160-feet-plus seconds later, Whitfield had recorded a personal-best and new school record toss of 162-feet, 9-inches to come away with the win.

Whitfield's throw helped the Warriors to a second-place showing after the first day's action with 60 points.

Whitfield said he felt it had a shot when it left his hand.

"It felt good when I released it. I was kind of surprised at how far it went," he said afterwards. "I just tried to calm down and focus and give it my best. I finished second last year so I feel I've really accomplished something this time around."

North Hall was strong getting title wins from Bryce Schuebert in the 1600, Malik Gill in the high jump, and Bennett in the shot put. Corson Teasley took second in the 1600, Gil Hoffman was second in the pole vault, Dylan Truelove was second in the shot put, and Bryant finished second in the discus.

Schuebert, who won his first region title, was more than happy to keep things rolling for the Trojans in the 1600 despite a somehwatb slow 4:39.53 time. He finished second to former Trojans Witt Nix last year.

"It was windy but I just tried to get a good start and keep my pace going," Schuebert said. "It feels great to win this. This is what I was building to."

Buford's Brandon Mangram, who won the triple jump with a leap of 41-10, was able to hold the top two jumpers coming into the meet in White County's Coley Loudermilk and Tucker Cook.

"Iknew it would be tough but I got a good jump early," Mangam said. "It feels great to be able to win region. Now I just want to go and finish in the top four (in Sectionals) to get to state."

Loudermilk and Cook scratched several times in the finals attempting to outjump Mangram.

The Wolves' Dequavious Picou took home a pair of fourth place finishes in the shot put and discus.

West Hall's Nick Sullens took second in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.
