GAINESVILLE - Tuesday, April 15th, is the deadline for Americans to pay their income tax, but it also marked Gainesville City Council's approval of a resolution to write off just over 195,000 in delinquent personal property tax.

The taxes date back to 2006 and 2007 according to Financial Services Manager Beverly Williams.

"It's definitely a lot of money however one thing to remember is of that total only $31,000 is actually city government tax," Williams said.

The rest of that total includes $9,951 in unpaid fees and $80,723 in interest, with nearly with $74,000 of the write-off in delinquent city school tax.

Williams added that the delinquent list is made up of businesses that closed and left town some time ago, claiming that every effort was made to collect the taxes before they went on the delinquent list.

"These are businesses that are long gone from our community," Williams said, but the resolution allows the city to clear up its books.

Council also approved writing off $ 2,030 in delinquent airport hangar receivables and $18,327 in utilities receivables.
