After discussing the proposed calendar during its work session Monday afternoon, the board approved the calendar during its monthly meeting Monday night.

"I am pleased with our new system calendar," said Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper. "The calendar committee did an excellent job developing the calendar around the needs of our students and system."

Teacher training/system improvement days, formerly referred to as pre-planning, will be Aug. 4-7, with the first day for students being Friday, Aug. 8.

Holiday observances and breaks during the school year will include: Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1; Fall Break on Monday, Oct. 13; Thanksgiving on Nov. 24-28; Christmas on Dec. 22-Jan. 2; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19; Winter Break/Snow Make-Up on Feb. 16-17; Good Friday on Friday, April 3; Spring Break/Snow Make-Up on April 6-10.

Teacher training/system improvement days during the school year include Friday, Oct. 10; Monday, Jan. 5; Friday, March 13 (also a possible snow make-up).

The last day for students will be May 22.

The calendar includes 177 days for students, with an equivalency of 180 days, system officials note.

"I was pleased that both the board and the committee looked at what was in the best interest of instruction when approving the final version of the calendar," Cooper said.
