GAINESVILLE - The Lanier Tea Party Patriots gathered once again Saturday to protest state and federal taxes and what they consider government encroachment on constitutional rights.

Tea Party president Hank Sullivan said the group covers Gainesville and Hall County and this was the third annual event beneath the Poultry Monument in downtown Gainesville.

Eleven speakers were invited including five U.S. Senate candidates, one candidate for Governor, and one candidate for Congress.

"They'll speak on the subject of taxation because we're up on the April 15th deadline," Sullivan said. "The Tea Party is made up of people who are disenfranchised by the right and the left. We just want to hear the truth and know what the truth is."

Event Coordinator Mary Landry was busy setting up the rally; she hoped it would encourage voters and tax payers to "wake up".

"We hope that a lot of people get involved," Landry said. "Many of the people are complacent and apathetic; what is it going to take?"

Also scheduled to visit the podium were David Pennington, Republican Candidate for Governor, Mike Scupin, local coordinator for the Lanier Tea party Patriots, and Austin Paul, State Coordinator for Turning Point USA.

Republican Senate candidates Phil Gingrey, Karen Handel, and Paul Broun were expected along with Atlanta Republican Senate candidate Derrick Grayson and Libertarian Senate Candidate Amanda Swafford.

Also on the rally podium was David Vogel, Democratic Candidate for 9th District of Georgia and Tom Brown with Georgia Fair Tax. The event lasted from one until four p.m.
