Block Party set today in Clarkesville

CLARKESVILLE - Despite a fire in early March, downtown Clarkesville is open for business.

That's the focus of today's first-ever Shop the Block Party in downtown.

The unique shopping and dining experience will fill downtown sidewalks with tables, tents, arts, entertainment and food.

From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., the event will feature a Clarkesville Strong dunk tank, music, Clarkesville fire truck displays and more.

"The unique merchandise of our downtown businesses, including arts and crafts, food and other items, will line the streets," said Clarkesville Main Street Manager Mary Beth Horton. "The event will feature a live performance stage with musical acts, gymnasts and more. Head over to the Gazebo, where an authentic bluegrass performance will entertain the crowd."

Downtown businesses will host special promotional sales, demonstrating artists and more.

"Mural painting, sidewalk chalk art and face-painting, as well as balloon artists, clowns and more, will amuse guests of all ages," Horton said.

Natalie Jane's Tavern, displaced by the recent downtown fire, will offer for purchase lunch on the Square. Numerous other Clarkesville restaurants will be selling food on the Square and in their places of business.

A highlight of the event will be free photos with the Easter Bunny in the Mauldin Gardens just off the Square from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The east side of the Square will be blocked for the party, but free parking is available throughout downtown. The event is free.
