ATLANTA - Three teachers from our area are among ten finalists for Georgia's 2015 Teacher of the Year.

Sarah Ballew Welch of Fannin County High School, Nick Crowder of South Forsyth High and Hyunjin Son of the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology made the list.

Welch is in English, oral/written communications and British literature. Crowder is in engineering education and Son teaches physics and foundations of engineering and technology.

State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge Monday announced the finalists from a pool of 156 applicants who were selected as the Teacher of the Year in their representative school districts.

"As usual, we had a very impressive group of teachers make the top ten. I look forward to working with all of them to help continue the student achievement gains our schools are showing," Barge said in a release.

The winner will be announced at the Georgia Teacher of the Year conference on May 16, at the Georgia International Convention Center.

The winner, according to Barge, will travel around the state and country, serving as an ambassador for the teaching profession. The winner will also be entered in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
