Officials have been working for about two years to revitalize the airstrip known as Remagen to fill a training gap Fort Stewart and the region had been missing for many years.
The Savannah Morning News reports that the lack of a dirt airstrip for C-130 pilots to practice a maneuver known as the combat landing was one of the few voids for troops in the area.
This week, a C-130 Hercules landed on the 3,000-foot strip. It was a historic moment for Fort Stewart and the Georgia Air National Guard's Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center and 165th Airlift Wing.
