UNG Alumni Weekend to feature golf tournament, fun run, update on strategic plan

DAHLONEGA - The Annual Nighthawks Athletic Club Golf Tournament, Corps of Cadets Fun Run, and an update on the University of North Georgia's Strategic planning process are just a few of the events planned for the upcoming Alumni Weekend on UNG's Dahlonega Campus.<br /> <br /> It is set for Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27.<br /> <br /> "For the first time, five class reunions will be held during Alumni Weekend," said Phil Collins, associate vice president for alumni relations and annual giving. "Immediately following the Memorial Retreat Ceremony on Saturday evening, an 'All-Alumni Mixer' will take place on the plaza between Price Memorial and Hansford Hall. Also, Price Memorial Steeple will be lighted on Friday evening and will remain lit through Sunday evening - another special touch in a weekend packed with events that our alumni won't want to miss."<br /> <br /> The weekend events will kick off at 9 a.m. on April 25 with the Annual Nighthawks Athletic Club Golf Tournament at Achasta Golf Course. Events later that day will include a campus tour for prospective UNG students at 2 p.m., a wine tasting and presentation by former professor Guy Oliver at 4:30 p.m., a Nighthawks baseball game at 5 p.m., and planetarium shows at 6:30 and 8 p.m.<br /> <br /> Saturday, April 26 will begin with the Annual NGCSU Alumni Association, Inc. general membership meeting and the Corps of Cadets 5K Fun Run, both set to begin at 8 a.m. Men's and women's soccer games and a cookout are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Also at noon, the NGCSU Alumni Association will hold its award luncheon, where eight individuals will be honored:<br /> <br /> 2014 Distinguished Alumnus: LTC (R) Gates Scoville '58<br /> 2014 Hall of Fame Recipients: LTG James L. Terry '78 and MG (R) Bud Thrasher '72<br /> 2014 Ralph Colley Spirit of North Georgia Award Recipient: Portia H. McDonald '64<br /> 2014 Young Alumnus: Andrea Wells '04<br /> 2014 Paul M. Hutcherson Outstanding Student Award (Male): Rich Green<br /> 2014 Paul M. Hutcherson Outstanding Student Award (Female): c/CPT Brooke Mazur<br /> 2014 Distinguished Professor Award: Dr. Timothy M. May, head of UNG's Department of History, Anthropology & Philosophy<br /> Later that day, the baseball team will begin a double-header at 1 p.m., and LTG James L. Terry '78 will present an overview on the 3rd Army and Army Central Command beginning at 2:30 p.m.; the Memorial Retreat Ceremony will be held at 4 p.m.<br /> <br /> Also on Saturday, Drs. Andrew J. Leavitt and JB Sharma will host an update on UNG's Strategic Plan at 9 a.m. in room 112 of Young Hall, where they will explain how the planning process has developed, and will discuss the progress that has been made in creating the strategic plan.<br /> <br /> On Sunday, April 26, the Golden Eagle Band will perform "Follow Me! A Soldier's Tale" at 1 p.m. The Corps of Cadets Military Awards Review will begin at 2 p.m., and open houses in the residence halls will follow at 3 p.m. The Order of Colombo and the Aggressor Platoon units will present military demonstrations at 3:30 p.m.<br /> <br /> Many of the weekend's events are free, but some require pre-payment, and registration is preferred for many others.
