ATLANTA (AP) -- A group of state senators is marking World Autism Awareness Day by reiterating their commitment to passing legislation requiring insurers to cover autism treatment.

The bill failed during this year's legislative session amid opposition from some House lawmakers who expressed concern about the costs of an insurance mandate on small businesses.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Sen. Renee Unterman were among those joining activists at a news conference Wednesday at the Capitol.

Cagle says he believes the autism bill would have passed the House if it hadn't been stopped in committee.

The bill would have required insurers to cover behavioral therapy for Georgia children 6 and under who have been diagnosed with autism. The bill would have limited annual payouts and exempted companies with 10 or fewer employees.
