Sgt. Ben Scott, 43, fired the fatal shots Sunday afternoon, school spokesman John Lester said, adding that Lt. Jason Youngblood and Cpl. Ben Pack were also on the scene. Authorities have said they were responding to a report of a man loading a gun near one of the school's dormitories.
Police chasing 20-year-old Zikarious Jaquan Flint told him to drop his weapon and he was shot as he turned around and raised one of his arms, Lester said. Flint was shot twice from behind, Muscogee County Coroner's officials have said.
Flint wasn't a student at Columbus State and his family's attorney, Stacey Jackson, has said he was unarmed and was visiting friends on campus.
The officer who fired the shots had passed exercises testing his shooting judgment five days earlier, Lester said. He added that Scott, a supervisory officer, worked as a Columbus police officer for 17 years before joining the campus police department in 2012. Scott has been placed on paid administrative leave.
In a statement, Georgia NAACP officials called Flint's death tragic, and said they're hoping the Georgia Bureau of Investigation completes its inquiry into the shooting quickly and thoroughly. NAACP officials have said they have concerns over conflicting details that were initially reported about the shooting. Flint was black.
