State and industry officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday at the site of the Georgia Bioscience Training Center about 35 miles east of Atlanta. The building is next to the $1 billion Baxter International pharmaceutical manufacturing plant under construction near Covington.
The bioscience center will be operated by the Georgia Quick Start program, expanding previous workforce training efforts for companies including Kia and Caterpillar. Baxter employees will train at the facility, but other companies in the life science industry can create similar programs.
Gov. Nathan Deal says the center will keep Georgia students in technical industries in the state after they finish their education and help to draw more companies to the state.
