BUFORD - Despite claims from a family member that a missing Gwinnett County man found dead on Saturday had been shot in the head, authorities said Monday afternoon that is not the case.

The body of 42-year-old Stanley Scott Maddox was discovered face down in a creek off Sudderth Road, which is in an unincorporated part of Buford.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said that while the medical examiner's office is still working to complete the autopsy, the could "say that with confidence" that Maddox had not been shot. Smith said the body was badly decomposed when it was discovered.

Over the weekend, family members said they had asked for help from police as they searched for Maddox. They claimed authorities refused to allowed them to file a missing persons report because Maddox had outstanding arrest warrants.

Police said that's not true.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Jeffrey Richter spoke with CBS 46 in Atlanta.

"If there were outstanding warrants, then the Sheriff's Department would have been looking for him, as well," said Richter.
