GAINESVILLE - Brenau University officially opened a new art gallery in Gainesville Friday.

The Manhattan Gallery, located in the Brenau Downtown Center, houses a permanent exhibition of modern art built primarily around donations from the celebrated Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection.

Dorothy Vogel was in Gainesville for the dedication of the gallery and for the screening of a movie about how she and her late husband amassed their art collection in their one-bedroom New York City apartment. The Vogels have donated many of the pieces to museums in every state. Among them: the High Museum in Atlanta. Brenau, the High's academic partner, already had a relationship with the Vogels and now holds more than 100 pieces from the Vogel collection.

The Brenau Downtown Center is also a new facility for training doctors in physical therapy. The school said Friday only one last accreditation hurdle remains before it can open the program to doctoral candidates.

The Brenau Gala, the official opening of the new gallery, begins at 6:30 Saturday night at the Downtown Center.
