Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said the incident happened Monday when his officers, along with Toccoa-Stephens County Animal Control, responded to a call of aggressive dogs on East Franklin Street.
"Upon arrival, officers witnessed two large dogs attacking a smaller dog," Jarrell said. "Officers attempted to get the dogs to stop using verbal commands, but were unable to do so."
Jarrell said the two dogs then charged aggressively at the officers who, in return, were forced to shoot the dogs to stop the attacks.
The investigation that followed showed the dogs were from a neighboring property and were running free, Jarrell said.
The dogs' owner, whose name was not released, was cited for no proof of rabies vaccination, dogs running at large, vicious animal, and allowing a female dog in heat to roam free, he said.
