NE Ga. Red Cross reports record # of fires in Jan.

GAINESVILLE - The Northeast Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross recently received a letter of recognition from Governor Nathan Deal. The letter thanked the chapter for its service during the 2014 snow storms.

At the same time, the office reports responding to a record number of house fires in its 12-county area during January.

Northeast Georgia chapter covers 12 counties: Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union and White. With over 250 volunteers, they are ready to respond to the residents needs 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

"Our volunteers are phenomenal. During Red Cross Month, we strive to let our community know the local work that is done daily by the chapter staff and volunteers", stated Joni Smith, Executive Director of the chapter. January was a record month for house fires throughout the chapter with volunteers responding to assist residents with their immediate needs. We responded to 24 fires in January financially assisting 77 residents. Then the snow and ice incidents occurred.
