According to Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews, attempting to serve an arrest warrant led to Wednesday afternoon's discovery on Wayah Trail, Clayton.
Andrews reports that around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, his deputies, along with agents of the Mountain Judicial Circuit Narcotics Criminal Investigation and Suppression Team, were at the home to serve a felony arrest warrant on 40-year-old James Lee Jenkins of Madison that was taken by the state probation office in Morgan County.
As officers attempted to serve the arrest warrant, they observed evidence that led them to believe Jenkins was involved in the manufacture of marijuana.
Officers obtained a search warrant for Jenkins' home and discovered an amount of suspect marijuana being grown inside.
Jenkins also had in his possession two firearms described as a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun and a Savage, bolt=action, .22 caliber rifle.
"Also located was a quantity of marijuana that appeared consistent with his personal use," said Rabun County Sheriff's Office Chief Investigator Gerald Johnson, noting the case remains under investigation.
Warrants for Jenkins, taken Friday, charge him with possession of methamphetamine, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and manufacturing marijuana.
The Rabun County charges are in addition to the Morgan County probation warrants, one of which is the felony warrant, while the other is a misdemeanor, Johnson said.
Jenkins' alleged marijuana grow consisted of 19 plants.
Once Jenkins makes bond on the new charges, he will be transferred to Morgan County Sheriff's Office Detention Center to answer to the Morgan County charges.
