ATLANTA - Led by double-digit increases in Rome, Columbus, Augusta, and Dalton, first-time claims for unemployment assistance in Georgia increased 4.2 percent in February.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the increase in claims in those four metropolitan areas offset declines elsewhere in the state, including Gainesville, where there was a 6.9 percent decreases in new filings. Atlanta, meanwhile, reported a 6.6 percent decrease and Athens zero-point-four percent.

The increases in claims ranged from 22.6 percent in Rome to 76.4 percent in Dalton.
