GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Kiwanis Club honored a Gainesville attorney and a Gainesville High School Key Club member at the club's 89th Annual Anniversary Celebration Tuesday night.

Abb Hayes, who practices with the Gainesville firm of Hulsey, Oliver & Mahar, was selected as this year's recipient of the John W. Jacobs, Jr. Youth Service Award. Hayes was honored for a long list of activities involving support of children and youth in the community, many of those services performed on behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County. Hayes has served on the Board of Directors for the Club since 1998, and has served in a variety of capacities on the Board.

The winner of the John C. Thompson Award, which recognizes the top Key Club member in the county, was Katherine Jones from Gainesville High School. Jones, who plans to attend the University of Georgia immediately after graduation, received a $1,000 scholarship as part of her recognition.

The speaker for the 2014 celebration was Fox News commentator Todd Starnes.
