Rabun sheriff: 'Major marijuana grow operation' dismantled

CLAYTON - Details are emerging about an interagency operation that led to the arrests of two men in Rabun Gap on Thursday.

Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews reports the operation involved Mountain Judicial Circuit Narcotics Criminal Investigation and Suppression special agents from his office, the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, City of Toccoa, Georgia National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and Stephens County Sheriff's Office, working in conjunction with RCSO Uniform Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The arrests followed execution of a search warrant at 97 Holden Cove Lane in Rabun Gap, which resulted in the discovery and seizure of a hydroponics marijuana grow operation.

The warrant yielded 114 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, with an estimated street value of $585,000.

But the raid didn't end there. Also seized were 33 weapons, illegal moonshine and farming equipment/vehicles agents said were used in the grow and cultivation operation.

Grow lights and other associated equipment also were seized.

William Harold Burrell, 61, of Rabun Gap was arrested and charged with one count of trafficking marijuana, one count possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count of possession of silencer, and one count possession of non-tax-paid liquor.

Samuel Chase Burrell, 30, of Rabun Gap was charged with one count of trafficking marijuana, one count possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count possession of a silencer, and one count possession of non-tax-paid liquor.

William Burrell since has bonded out. Samuel Burrell remains in the Rabun County Detention Center.
