GAINESVILLE - Dust off your walking shoes. The City of Gainesville will kick off a community health initiative called Gainesville Walks on Monday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. at Fair Street School.

"It's a community health initiative," said Mayor Danny Dunagan. "I was approached by the Newtown Florist Club and just thought, after listening to them, that it was a great idea, so we're going to designate April as a community health initiative to walk."

Dunagan said the point of the initiative was to exercise, socialize, find time to walk and have a healthier community.

Several organizations are partnering with the city to put on the initiative, including Gainesville Parks and Rec, the Boys and Girls Club of Hall County, Brenau University and more.

Maps of the routes are posted on the city's website (see link below) and walkers who send their accomplishments to [email protected] will be highlighted on the city's Facebook page.

Prizes will be awarded to the first 50 walkers who show up for the kick off.
